RACINE-SATTLEY FIFE, DRUM
AND BUGLE CORPS
On July 28, 1903 The Racine Wagon & Carriage Company and the Sattley Manufacturing
Company of Springfield, Illinois, a large manufacturer of plows and implements,
consolidated into the Racine-Sattley Company.  The new Illinois corporation headquartered
in Springfield, IL, became the only concern in the world up to that time that manufactured
plows, implements, farm wagons and spring vehicles of that kind. Endeavors had been
made in the past to consolidate plow companies with vehicle concerns, but this was the first
successful consolidation of its kind.  However, by September of 1915 the Racine-Sattley
Company was in bankruptcy proceedings.

The Racine-Sattley Drum and Bugle corps was organized sometime around 1903.  At the
time of the consolidation in July of 1903, the Racine Wagon & Carriage Company had 900
employees in Racine.  The Racine-Sattley Drum and Bugle corps lasted until July 15, 1905
when 22 of its members joined Racine Council No. 77 of the National Fraternal League as a
group.  They immediately became the Racine National Fraternal League Drum and Bugle
Corps.

Interesting highlights include:

For Memorial Day in 1904 the General William A. Bancroft Camp No. 199,
Spanish-American War Veterans formerly of Racine's Company F of the Wisconsin National
Guard, observed the day as usual.  The members met on Monument Square in downtown
Racine at 9 a.m., formed in line and marched to Mound Cemetery at 9:30 a.m.  They were
led by the Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps.  After the services at the cemetery
the drum corps played taps.

On Friday night, June 10, 1904, the entire Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps met
at 8 o'clock a short distance from Mr. Jacob C. Lund's home on College Avenue in Racine.
Mr. Lund was Racine-Sattley Company Treasurer.  Attired in their new uniforms the drum
corps marched up College Ave, wheeled and halted in front of Mr. Lund's home.  There
they surprised Mr. Lund and his wife with an impromptu concert of martial music in their
honor.  Mr. Lund made a neat little speech of thanks, congratulated the drum corps on its
fine appearance and musical proficiency and then he passed cigars around to the drum
corps members.  The drum corps then marched back down College Ave. playing as they
went.
During the evening of Monday, June 27, 1904, the Racine-Sattley Drum and Bugle Corps
met at the home of H. E. Miles, Racine-Sattley Company President, who resided on
Washington Ave. and serenaded him.  In turn, they were treated to refreshments and
enjoyed a pleasant two hours.
I would imagine that the drum corps concerts at both of the homes of Mr. Lund and Mr.
Miles were given in gratitude for the Racine-Sattley Company's buying the new uniforms for
the drum corps.

A sad note occurred Monday morning, July 18, 1904, when Arthur Reiman, only 21 years
old, died at his home after a three week illness with typhoid pneumonia.  He was a member
of the Racine- Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps.

On Sunday morning, July 31, 1904, the Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps along
with the Columbian Knights Society hosted a well-managed pleasure trip from Racine to
Chicago aboard the Goodrich Line steamship Virginia.   A lot of credit was given to these
two organizations for arranging this excursion as this was the first time in two years that the
Virginia had come into Racine's port for a daylight trip.  Over 200 people went on this
excursion.  Apparently it was a perfect day on the lake.

The Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps attended the Walworth County Fair in
Elkhorn, WI, on Monday, September 19, 1904.  They went by special train from Racine to
Elkhorn.  There were thirteen coaches on the special train which carried 600 people from
Racine to Elkhorn for the County Fair.
The Racine-Sattley Company had a large display of wagons, carriages, runabouts,
buggies, etc. at the fair.  The vehicles, numbering close to 100, were sold right on the
grounds and reportedly sold very well.
The attraction, however, was the 40 member Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps.
E. D. King was the drum corps' manager at this time.  22,000 people attended the fair that
day.  The Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps marched around the fair grounds
throughout the day playing familiar tunes.  Also, it was estimated that 10,000 people visited
the Racine-Sattley exhibit where the drum corps also played concerts throughout the day to
attract people to their company's display.  As a result, the Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and
Bugle Corps received much exposure and very favorable publicity. The next day The
Racine Weekly Journal newspaper stated "Without a doubt the Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum
and Bugle Corps is the largest in the United States and it is less than one year old.  Their
work is excellent and their attractive uniforms took the big crowd by storm.  The leader and
manager is to be complimented upon efforts in bringing the corps up to such a high degree
of efficiency."

On Thursday evening, October 6, 1904, when the Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle
Corps escorted United States Senator J. V. Quarles from the Hotel Racine to the Lakeside
Auditorium where an estimated 2,000 people heard Racine's former townsman speak.  Also,
once at the Lakeside Auditorium, the Racine-Sattley Fife, Drum and Bugle Corps played a
short concert as a preliminary to Senator Quarles talk on national as well as state issues.
Senator Quarles, a Republican, at that time was the junior Wisconsin Senator.
