| RACINE KILTIE KADETS HIGHLIGHTS: COPYRIGHT 2005 The Racine YMCA Kiltie Kadets Drum and Bugle Corps was organized in the fall of 1958. Its purpose was to provide a training ground for boys aged 10 - 13 who were interested in becoming a Kiltie. Also, the Kilties were then able to change their age requirement from 10 - 18 years old to 14 - 21. Up to this time the Kilties were at a disadvantage because they couldn't march college age boys at a time when all their Class A competitors were doing so. The Kiltie Kadets made their first marching appearance in Racine's 1959 Memorial Day parade. The Kiltie Kadets grew rapidly and by 1962 they were a very competitive Class C drum and bugle corp. The Kiltie Kadets were now in great demand as an entertainment unit at local functions too. The 1963 season saw the Kiltie Kadets place first 12 times and send up 17 talented young boys to their "big brothers", the Kilties, at the end of this season. The Kiltie Kadets continued on as a very entertaining and competitively successful drum and bugle corps until they were disbanded after the 1981 season, thus ending the Kilts' "life line" for talent. Here are some of their highlights: 1971 Class C North American Champions Wisconsin VFW State Champions: 1963, 1976, 2nd place 1966, and 3rd place 1971. Wisconsin American Legion State 2nd place in 1971 1973 Pre-game performance at the Green Bay Packer intra-squad game in front of 56,000 people. 1976 Cadet Corps International Round-Robin Champions. 1980 Cadet Corps International (CCI) Champions, 2nd place in 1979, 3rd place in 1977 &1978. 1980 undefeated in Cadet Corps Class. 2 DCI Appearances - 1979 they placed 15th in Class A prelims and in 1980 they placed 12th in Class A prelims. This was believed at the time to be the highest finish ever by a feeder corps at the DCI Championships. |
